Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies was asked to provide a scientific opinion on a list of health claims pursuant to Article 13 of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006, so the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) drafted a scientific opinion indicating that “a cause and effect relationship has been established between the consumption of olive oil polyphenols (standardised by the content of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives) and protection of LDL particles from oxidative damage. “… In order to bear the claim, 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives (e.g. oleuropein complex and tyrosol) in olive oil should be consumed daily”.

Finally, this health claim was included under the art. 13 list. This statement from the Panel confirmed that the existing clinical studies made on olive polyphenols were quite enough to confirm this benefitial effects.

The oxidation of blood lipids (LDL cholesterol) is considered as one of the major risk factors that are present in cardiovascular events. This process involves a process of oxidation and inflammation that drives to the formation of plaques and the known consequences.

Hytolive® has been also investigated in one clinical study showing an anti-platelet aggregation activity by a 46% decrease in the serum TXB2 production after blood clotting at T4d (“A thromboxane effect of a hydroxytyrosol-rich olive oil wastewater extract in patients with uncomplicated Type I diabetes”; CL Léger et al.; European Journal of Clinical Nutrrition 2005), leading to a possible prevention of thrombotic and microthrombotic processes.

And other published studies showed an olive oil polyphenols activity by increasing HDL cholesterol and reducing LDL cholesterol (“Olive oil polyphenols decrease LDL concentrations and LDL atherogenicity in men in a randomized controlled trial”; Álvaro Hernáez; The Journal of Nutrition 2015 and “Olive Oil Polyphenols Enhance High-Density Lipoprotein Function in Humans: A randomized controlled trial”; Álvaro Hernáez et al; Arterioscleros, Thrombosis and vacular Biology 2014”)
