A Mediterranean Diet is one of the causes behind the consideration of Spain as the world´s healthiest country.
According to the 2019 edition of the Bloomberg Healthier Country Index which ranks 169 economies, “according to factors that contribute to overall health, Spain is the world’s healthiest country”. Spain placed sixth in the previous gauge, published in 2017.
This index is based on variables including life expectancy while imposing penaltis on risks such as tobacco use and obesity. According to the European Observatory of Health Systems and Policy, Spain showed a decline in cardiovascular diseases and deaths from cancer.
Researchears say eating habits may provide clues to health levels enjoyed by Spain and Italy, as a “Mediterranean Diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil or nuts, had a lower rate of major cardiovascular events than those asigned to a reduced-fat diet”, according to a study led by University of Navarra.
Extra virgin olive oil contains many olive polyphenols that make it as probably the best fatty acids source.
