European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Scientific Panel: “5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives in olive oil should be consumed daily”

… This amount, if provided by moderate amounts of olive oil, can be easily consumed in the context of a balanced diet. The concentrations in some olive oils may be too low to allow the consumption of this amount of polyphenols in the context of a balanced diet. The target population is the general population.

To get 5 mg of natural hydroxytyrosol for the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress you must consume an extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), but not all EVOOs have that level. You must focus on premium and early harvest EVOOs. You can also find 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol in approx. 5-10 table olives.

Coming back to the EFSA Panel conclusion, this Panel concludes that a cause and effect relationship has been established between the consumption of olive oil polyphenols (standardised by the content of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives) and protection of LDL particles from oxidative damage.

The oxidation of blood lipids (i.e. LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol)) is key for the heart health management. Cholesterol is a necessary molecule for the human body. The problem comes up when this cholesterol precipitates on the walls of the arteries, iniating a process called atherosclerosis. A continuous process of oxidation and inflammation  occurs. Natural hydroxytyrosol can inhibit and modulate this process.

Many times it is not easy to find high quality EVOOs or table olives or even to have access to it. This is the reason why Hytolive® was born, to make it possible. Now, you can find capsules, drinks, foods and other solutions containing natural hydroxytyrosol with Hytolive®, a 100% naturally produced extract from olives.
